Google Messages could soon let you edit sent texts

A feature that has been available in all popular messaging apps for years now. The best Android messaging apps make it easy to change the texts you send. Google Messages is the only one that doesn’t let you edit RCS messages. Markers in the Messages beta app in December 2023 showed that Google was working on this feature. There will soon be an edit option for sent texts in Google Messages, according to a new report. The report also gives more information about how it will work.

In the most recent beta version of Google Messages, @AssembleDebug turned on some hidden flags and made the edit button work. Based on the leaker’s personal experience, the feature seems pretty easy to use. You can edit a text message by long pressing on it. To change the message, tap on the pencil icon. After making changes, pressing the “Enter” key will automatically add them to your original message.

The leaker said on TheSpAndroid that you can change a message up to 30 minutes after sending it. Google will also keep a history of all the versions of the edited message and let the recipient see the original text that wasn’t changed.

It looks like Google still has some work to do before it can roll out the Edit feature in Google Messages. At the moment, the feature isn’t working as it should. The leaker saw that his changed messages showed up as separate texts in a group RCS conversation. For editing a sent chat in Google Messages, it looks like both people involved need to have the Edit option turned on.

AssembleDebug thinks that Google might add the feature to let users edit sent messages in Google Messages by the end of February or the beginning of March.

Keep in mind that you can only edit RCS conversations in Google Messages. You won’t be able to edit regular text messages. While SMS has been around for a while, it does not allow editing of sent text messages.

Google is also working on a number of other improvements for Google Messages, such as adding the ability to respond to a message with a double tap and integrating Gemini AI to let you quickly write messages, find images, translate texts, and more. Google just recently began adding Screen Effects to its messaging app as well.

Google could talk about these features at MWC later this month or at the March 2024 Pixel Feature Drop.
